Hard and Soft Goods
Jacobs Carter Burgess provides design solutions for distribution facilities and fulfillment centers for a wide range of industries.  Project types include Greenfield facilities as well as renovations and expansions for facilities with varying levels of automation and complexity.  Our experience includes small scale facilities to projects in excess of 1 million  square feet in size for products ranging from office supplies, apparel, audio / visual equipment, books, sporting goods, and furniture to name a few.

Refrigerated Warehouse Facilities
The firm offers its clients specialized expertise in facilities for the storage and processing of temperature-sensitive products and goods such a food / beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.  These facilities generally have multiple compartments with varying temperature, humidity, and climate-control requirements.  Within the past six years, Jacobs Carter Burgess has designed and constructed more than 18 million square feet of refrigerated / freezer space.

Food and Beverage Processing
Jacobs Carter Burgess specializes in facility design for processing and storage of foods and beverages including meat, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables, dairy, and baked goods.  These facilities are highly automated and designed to achieve maximum energy efficiency at a competitive initial investment. Air and Ground Cargo
New trends in distribution have led to Jacobs Carter Burgess’ involvement in the facility and materials handling systems of air and ground distribution networks. These facilities have included central receiving and inspection buildings through with retail goods are security screened before they enter the main terminal.

Key Projects

ALDI Grocery Distribution Centers, Multiple Locations
Expansions: Jacobs Carter Burgess provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, and architectural engineering services for two distribution center expansions each with 50,000-square-feet of freezer / cooler space.

Greenfield projects: As part of the design / build team, Jacobs Carter Burgess provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, architectural, and on-site construction administration for four complete design / build projects. Each facility was approximately 450,000-square-feet and included a 150,000-square-feet freezer / cooler area

Federated Department Stores Direct to Consumer Fulfillment Center, Portland, TN
Jacobs Carter Burgess provided A/E services to design the fulfillment center building and site work for a new 642,000 square foot fulfillment center. Services provided by Jacobs Carter Burgess included architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and landscape architecture. The project includes includes a 2-story main office (50,000 SF), a warehouse office (10,000 SF), warehouse floor area (607,000 SF), and structural mezzanine (150,000 sq.ft). The building footprint is expandable to 1-million square-feet.

Goya Food Warehouse, Houston, TX
Jacobs Carter Burgess provided full-service architectural and engineering design services, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing to produce construction document plans and specifications for a greenfield food warehouse consisting of a 109,297-square-foot warehouse and an 8,000-square-foot office space with future second floor expansion area. This design / build project used a fast-track delivery method.

McKesson Pharmaceutical Distribution Center, Conroe, TX
Jacobs Carter Burgess provided civil, landscape, architecture, structural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection and electrical engineering for a new 195,000-square-foot pharmaceutical distribution center for McKesson. The single-story conventional steel framed and tilt wall construction building featured a 30,000-square-foot pick and sortation mezzanine and is fully air-conditioned to comply with FDA requirements.

Publix Frozen Food Distribution Center, Lawrenceville, GA
Jacobs Carter Burgess provided architectural design as well as structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, and fire protection engineering for a 200,000-square-foot frozen food distribution center. The project consisted of a new distribution center with a freezer, associated docks, and various support spaces. The building is a single story (75 feet tall) AS/RS rack supported refrigerated building, and the perimeter walls are primarily insulated metal wall panels. The refrigeration system was designed to maintain specific temperature requirements of -10 degrees Fahrenheit and -20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wal-Mart Distribution Center Program, Locations Nationwide
Jacobs Carter Burgess provides comprehensive real estate, architecture and engineering services to Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. for warehouse and distribution centers located throughout the United States. Each distribution center is different, but most range from 850,000 to over 1 million sq.ft. and contain a new warehouse/distribution center, a vehicle maintenance facility, a truck shipping and receiving area, a data processing center, a full-service kitchen and office areas. Jacobs Carter Burgess has completed more than 84 Greenfield distribution centers and 24 facility expansions for Wal-Mart to date.

ReedHycalog National Headquarters / Manufacturing Facility, Conroe, TX
ReedHycalog, a leading manufacturer of oil and gas drill bits, is currently building a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing factory, a 110,000-square-foot office and research laboratory building complete with food service cafeteria and employee fitness center, and an onsite jogging trail. Jacobs Carter Burgess is the project’s design manager providing advanced planning; industrial process engineering; architecture; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering; process engineering; and civil engineering/design. Critical activities include operationally sensitive interviews with existing staff, data collection, operational analysis, development of space standards, and a new facility program. Other analysis involves the conceptual design of relationships between the 245,000-square-foot manufacturing floor and mission critical staff in the new administration building.

Walgreen’s Distribution Center, Moreno Valley, CA
Jacobs Carter Burgess is providing full A/E services for a fully automated state of the art distribution center designed to supply about 600 retail stores with provisions for expansion. The distribution center will be approximately 800,000 square feet, and indcludes: office areas, a 7,000 square foot truck maintenance building and a 2,000 square foot truck wash area. The warehouse also includes a stand-alone 100-foot high Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS).
