Forklift Drivers Prefer Jungheinrich at P&G Mexico City

Procter and Gamble is one of the largest manufacturers of consumer products in the world, with facilities around the globe. At its personal care and household products distribution center in Mexico City, P&G has selected Jungheinrich lift trucks to help it hone the efficiency of its warehouse forklift truck operations.

Says Alfonso Castro, Engineering Manager at the Mexico facility, “Since June of 2006 we’ve been using Jungheinrich’s man-up high-rack turret stacker – the ‘Kombi,’ and mast moving reach trucks from their ETV and ETM series, as well as some pallet jacks. We use them for picking applications and general product movement within our plant. Frankly, we couldn’t be happier with the level of technology in their equipment. It’s the highest in the industry.”

Notes Carlos Shipley, P&G’s Global MDO PS Logistics Engineering TechnologyLeader based in Cincinnati, “Jungheinrich trucks offer ease of use and great performance in our Mexico City applications. Though we also run a mix of other manufacturers’ equipment there, you’ll hear our operators say they all prefer to use the Jungheinrich trucks.”

Adds Alfonso Castro, “One of the things we like most about Jungheinrich is the long battery life offered by their 3-phase AC technology. We run two 12-hour shifts per day, 365 days a year. In normal operation with our other truck brands we have to change batteries every 8 hours, but Jungheinrich trucks give us 12-hour shifts before recharging – and sometimes even more. That kind of performance is just one factor leading to a big improvement in our productivity.”

In the P&G application, the Kombi turret stackers handle a wide range of pallet weights. The work environment they deal with includes storage racks extending in height over 9m. The stackers easily negotiate 1.8m wide aisles, gliding along under the automatic control of an embedded wire guidance system.

Says Castro, “The Kombi is easy to operate and the few controls the driver needs to use while on wire guidance are very responsive and precise. Visibility and ergonomics are great, too. The same is true for the reach trucks.”

“Another thing we like,” adds Castro, “is the rugged way these trucks are designed and built. For example, only the parts that really need to be heavy have been made heavy, so there’s no extra weight. And components and systems are easy to access for maintenance on both the Kombi and the reach trucks. On all of the vehicles, we’ve found AC technology in general to be reliable, easy to maintain and trouble-free.” Says Carlos Shipley, “When we began looking for new forklifts for Mexico City, we wanted the best combination of
quality of manufacture, ability to handle our kind of applications, easy-to-use controls, longevity and safety – safety was very important. We ended up going with Jungheinrich trucks because we got all of those things, as well as a long battery life and great depth of tech support.”
