LXE rugged computers — born rugged, not made rugged

At LXE we build rugged computers. In fact, we've been building our handheld and vehicle mount rugged, industrial computers for over 36 years. And “Yes”, we've seen it all. We know how wireless technology gets used/abused in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and ports.

So what makes a LXE rugged computer so rugged?LXE rugged computers

  • Shatter proof polycarbonate/ABS alloy plastic casings that are 4x thicker than commercial grade casings.
  • “Precision Fit” parts and Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) O-rings - for maximum protection from water and dust.
  • "Epoxy topped" silicone keypads that are chemically coated to protect against airborne and spilled chemical agents.
  • Key internal components that are built to withstand an industrial temperature range of -40º to 85ºC versus a commercial temperature range of 0º to 70ºC.
  • Fewer boards & connections than our competitors - fewer opportunities for failure.
  • Key electrical components are soldered and glued to printed circuit boards to better withstand drops & shocks.
  • External connectors are flex-mounted to circuit boards to absorb vibration.
  • Power supplies are isolated and designed for a higher input range than required (25% margin), which better protects your LXE computer from power surges and spikes.

And since you're only as strong as your weakest link, our accessories are as tough as our rugged computers. Our docking cradles and batteries go through the same “battery” of tests as the computers.

The Testing Process

Once we've designed and built the computer, we test, and test, and test, and test…

Rugged computer on vibe machineWe vibrate test our rugged computers to make sure they can withstand the day-to-day abuse seen in a typical warehouse or distribution center. See the vibrate test in action: Vibe Test (625 K wmv).

We shock test our industrial computers via an LXE exclusive shock test process, because forktrucks have solid tires and no suspension.

Rugged computer keyboard testWe drop test our handheld rugged computers onto concrete, not wood or carpet - on all sides - because you don't find wood or carpeted floors in the warehouse.

And we usage test to insure your LXE computer peripherals are as rugged as your computer.

We water test because an industrial computer is used in rain and snow, and has to be able to withstand daily wash downs.

ThermotronsWe temperature test because an LXE industrial computer has to endure moving from a -20º freezer to a 90º loading dock… in seconds.

And we EMI/RFI test so that your LXE computer can withstand the inevitable power surges and spikes.

The above isn’t everything we do to insure that your LXE rugged computer is the most rugged and reliable – we can’t tell you everything. If you need more convincing, ask our thousands of long-term customers about the legendary ruggedness and reliability of our products. They may not know all that LXE goes through to make sure our products thrive in whatever environment they are used, but they will tell you how well and how long they work and work and work.

If you would like more info on how to determine how rugged a “rugged industrial computer” truly is, please read our white paper “What You Need to Know Before Purchasing a Mobile Rugged Computer”. This Buyer's Guide explains the various mobile rugged computer specs then takes you beyond the specs and teaches you the design characteristics to look for and the questions you'll need to ask to determine an industrial computer's true capabilities and limitations.
