Rehrig History

Rehrig HistoryFrom a start-up Los Angeles manufacturer of wooden milk crates in 1913, Rehrig has always believed that the key to success was products with an advantage. In the '30s, the company transformed from a manufacturer of wooden crates, to a metals manufacturing company and made crates from wire until the '60s.

When advances in plastics technology brought about the potential for larger capacity molds, the company investigated injection molding. Though more capital-intensive initially, injection molding technology allowed more sophisticated designs of complex geometric shapes that would allow the unique combination of high strength and light weight. The technique could maintain precise tolerances and exact predictability while allowing the ability to vary wall thickness throughout the same part for added strength at critical load-bearing and wear points.

Armed with injection molding capability, company management set into motion an aggressive expansion program into the beverage industry and opened a branch manufacturing facility in Erie, Pennsylvania to serve Eastern markets. The expansion proved successful and the corporate growth strategy of additional plants to serve new regional markets was continued.

These new locations brought new segments of the food industry into the product line and prompted the design of innovative shipping containers for soft drink bottlers, commercial bakeries, curbside recycling and waste collection and agriculture.

Today, Rehrig Pacific has numerous locations worldwide: Los Angeles, CA (headquarters); Erie, PA; Lawrenceville, GA; Dallas, TX; Kenosha, WI; Raymond, NH; Mexico; Brazil; Chile; Hong Kong and Belgium.

One of the challenges along the way was the need for environmentally-sound products and business practices which led to today's policy of using only 100% recyclable materials throughout the product line. There is also a company mandate about strict recycling practices and products are designed to contain as much as 100% recycled material, depending on strength requirements. Environmental friendliness is further helped by the use of non-heavy metal colors.

Every Rehrig product requires specialized features, consistent tolerances, materials strength and reliable delivery. But Rehrig's core strength lies in those elusive design characteristics that make its products notably superior. In some instances, functional as well as design aspects are so unique they have been granted patents.

The vision to anticipate new markets and the wisdom to develop products that are functionally superior have worked well for Rehrig Pacific. The process will continue in the future.
